The Swedish Consulate-General
in Phuket will be phased out
The Government decided to phase out the
Swedish Consulate-General in Phuket, Thailand.
As a result of the tsunami disaster on
26 December 2004, it was considered necessary for Sweden to have a
reinforced on site representation in Phuket for a period of time. This
is why the Government decided to open a Consulate-General. The main
task of the Consulate has been to assist victims and relatives of
Swedes who died. Support given to relatives in Thailand has gradually
been reduced and several organisations that participated in this have
phased out their activities.
Considerable demand for various services in Phuket still remains, but
of a different nature than that which led to the opening of the
Consulate.
An expanded Honorary Consulate will therefore be
re-established. The Embassy in Bangkok will also be expanded. This
process is expected to be completed by the end of June 2008.
